Careers and Alumni...
What is the Cambridge University Land Society?
Contact with the Department does not cease on graduation. Cambridge University Land Society (CULS), the longest-established alumni group in the University, is an informal society for graduates of Cambridge University who have: a degree in Land Economy (or any of its predecessor courses); or are members of the RICS; or are primarily concerned with land in their careers. Membership is also open to undergraduates and other members of the Department of Land Economy. The Society exists for two purposes:
- to provide occasions for members to meet each other, and to encourage amongst them friendship and cooperation;
- to act as a link between members within and from outside the Department of Land Economy, offering opportunities for the exchange of views upon, and discussion of, matters of interest.
CULS also have their own website (www.culandsoc.com)
Who are the members?
We have over 600 members. The majority are or have been chartered surveyors, in major London and provincial practices, the financial institutions and in smaller or more specialised firms.
Many other members work in sectors peripheral to surveying - for example, in the financial sector, consultancy, business, the academic world, and the public sector. Some left Cambridge in the '30s, others graduated last year. Many members of the Society are in senior positions in their profession.
Why should you join?
Because you will meet interesting people, go to interesting places, keep in touch with fellow graduates, further your business contacts - and it can count towards your CPD!
How do I join?
Complete the Membership Application Form, or write to the Honorary Secretary of the Society. His address is as follows:
Mr Giles Dobson

The Committee considers membership applications at each meeting, and usually meets every four months.
Subscriptions
Undergraduate members of the Society do not pay a subscription. New graduates receive one year's membership subscription-free and, if not in employment, can extend this by a further two years on notifying the Honorary Secretary. The annual subscription is £15 a year, payable by Bankers Order.
What does the society do?
CULS organises four meetings a year:
Every autumn we hold an afternoon meeting and supper, usually in London. In recent years this has included behind-the-scenes visits to Kew Gardens, Spencer House and Shakespeare's Globe.
In winter we hold a joint meeting with the Society of Property Researchers, which centres around discussion of current issues in the property sector, eg the office of the future, or property indices.
In the spring the Society has a weekend meeting, which in the past has taken in Norwich, the Norfolk Broads, Ironbridge Gorge, Oxford, and Milton Keynes.
Finally, the Society holds its Annual Dinner and AGM each summer in Cambridge, with an eminent guest speaker.
We also publish a quarterly Newsletter, including articles on property and its wider issues, and members' personal and business news. We arrange speakers for an annual Careers Evening in Cambridge, run jointly with the Land Economy Society, and award two prizes to undergraduates for exceptional performance in the Land Economy Tripos examinations.
