Postgraduate
Introduction
The Department offers a range of options for full time postgraduate study. There are a number of MPhil courses available and the Department also has a full PhD programme. The term MPhil is used by Cambridge for taught, one year masters courses. The MPhil is equivalent to an MSc at other Universities and there is no significance to the difference in these titles.
Taught courses run from October to July. Scholarships and awards are available.
The current postgraduate programmes are:
- MPhil in Real Estate Finance;
- MPhil in Environmental Policy;
- MPhil in Planning, Growth and Regeneration;
- MPhil in Land Economy Research;
- MPhil in Land Economy (by thesis);
- PhD in Land Economy.

MPhil in Environmental Policy
A ten month MPhil by instruction combining environmental economics and environmental law and regulation as a preparation for a career in environmental policy. This unique course has been designed to equip participants with the skills and tools that will help them successfully design, implement and assess environmental policy in a variety of policy settings. Its modular structure offers a combination of core components and options.
MPhil in Planning, Growth and Regeneration
A ten month MPhil by instruction focusing on planning and development issues in modern society. It draws on policy, economics, law and planning, with a range of options.
MPhil in Land Economy Research
The MPhil in Land Economy Research aims to provide students with a broad grounding in social science research methods and apply this in some area of Land Economy. The course provides a strong research training through the University Joint Schools Social Sciences Research Methods course. This includes coursework across both quantitative and qualitative research methods and other aspects of research training. Candidates are also required to undertake two modules from those offered across the Department's MPhil courses and to submit a 20,000 word dissertation.
MPhil in Land Economy (by thesis)
The MPhil in Land Economy is predominantly a research degree. Candidates complete a thesis of not more than 30,000 words in length, submitted after eleven months of research on a topic within one of the Department's research areas. There is an oral examination on the dissertation and the general field of knowledge within which it falls. This programme runs from October to the end of August.
PhD
Completion of a PhD (Doctorate) requires a minimum of three years full-time study. Candidates are not registered for the PhD programme in the first instance (in common with most Cambridge Departments) but are assessed towards the end of their first year after commencing research.
