Academic profile

Marc is the Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of PineBridge Benson Elliot, a leading European private equity real estate firm. He previously established and led Doughty Hanson Real Estate, and held earlier executive roles with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Goldman Sachs and Chicago-based JMB Realty. During a 35-year career Marc has structured and funded (equity and debt) billions of euros in commercial and residential property developments, working with leading developers in the US and across Europe.

Marc is a leading industry figure in the public policy arena, with roles including: Chairman of the Bank of England’s Commercial Property Forum; advisor to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (through the MHCLG/BPF Commercial Property Forum); member of the RICS Global Risk Management Forum; Global Governing Trustee and Past UK Chairman of the Urban Land Institute; and member of the Cambridge Land Economy Advisory Board (CLEAB). In 2014 Marc was a co-creator of the Honor Chapman Memorial Lecture series (now the Chapman Barrigan Lectures), a focal point for women’s leadership in the UK property industry.

Marc was the co-author of A Vision for Real Estate Finance in the UK (2014), a landmark post-GFC report prepared for the Bank of England which explored the relationship between commercial property financing and financial stability in the UK.  In 2019 he co-authored Regenerating Cities, which explored the range of risks associated with development / urban regeneration, highlighting the impact of risk on project viability and, ultimately, on city growth.  During 2021 Marc served on the Expert Advisory Group for the Independent Review into the Valuation of Property Assets, commissioned by the RICS Standards and Regulation Board “to future-proof confidence in valuations relied upon directly by third parties,” e.g. valuations for financial reporting, trading in collective investment vehicles and property financing.  Most recently, Marc has acted as the principal interlocutor between the UK property industry and the Bank of England in establishing detailed guidelines for CRE loan risk weightings and ‘prudent valuation’ methodologies for UK property lending (part of the so-called ‘Basel 3.1 standards’).
