Chhattisgarh (CG) is one of the recently formed states in India (formed in Nov 2000). CG has experimented with various policy options to address issues in the low income housing sector, with little success. In CG, as in most of India, there is a growing shortage of affordable housing for the low income households. My research centres on the issues that constrain the supply of and demand for low income housing in Chhattisgarh from a New Institutional Economics (NIE) perspective. The framework focuses on transaction costs, property rights, and bargaining power and the effect of these on the supply of and demand for housing in the low income groups. |
