Policy Evaluation

The Department's interest and expertise in this area was underpinned in 1995 by the decision by the Department of the   Environment to award to the Department its major research project for the Evaluation of Regeneration Activities funded under the Single Regeneration Budget Bidding Round. The research programme will run to 2003 and is funded to over £1.7 million. It is led by Peter Tyler assisted by Angela Brennan (full time Research Officer) and John Rhodes (Senior Research Fellow in Urban Regeneration). The project involves the gathering and investigation of data and the further development of research methodology. Members of the urban regeneration team were also responsible for completing a large scale study for the Department of the Environment of the Enterprise Zone Policy in the United Kingdom. Two reports from the study were published by HMSO during 1995 (Evaluation of the Enterprise Zone Programme and Report on Progress with the Enterprise Zone Experiment). John Rhodes and Peter Tyler have also recently published in a Discussion Paper the results of an evaluation which they undertook for the Welsh Development Agency into the costs and benefits of property led economic regeneration initiatives.
