Information

Terry is Director, Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research (4CMR), Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge. He is directing NewEDGE, a project funded by The Three Guineas Trust, one of the Sainsbury Family Trusts, to simulate the historical emissions of greenhouse gases. The project adopts a whole-system approach which allows for interactions between the energy system, the economic system and emissions of greenhouse gases annually at a global level, over the period 1973 to 2006. He is Leader of Research Theme “Integrated Modelling” in the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.

Besides this work his research responsibilities have included directing contributions to the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) and to the FP6 European project Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies for Europe (ADAM), using the European and world models (E3ME and E3MG). He is Chairman of Cambridge Econometrics, the company originally formed by University of Cambridge researchers to apply the results of academic modelling research for business and government.
He was a Co-ordinating Lead Author (CLA) for the IPCC´s Fourth Assessment Report reporting in 2007, taking responsibility for the chapter on greenhouse gas mitigation from a cross-sectoral perspective. He was earlier a CLA for the IPCC´s Third Assessment Report and a member of the core writing team for the Synthesis Report Climate Change 2001. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the World Wide Views on Global Warming, and a member of Editorial Boards of International Journal of Climate Strategies and Management, of the International Journal of Global Warming and of Economic Systems Research.

Research Interests

  • Systematic modelling of policies to achieve climate stabilisation
  • The effects of global warming on energy demand
  • Real carbon prices and long-term economic growth
  • The role of money in the economy
  • The effects of the banking crisis on the world and national economies and on atmospheric pollution including greenhouse gas emissions

Current posts Director, Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research (4CMR)
Research interests

Current Research Projects: NewEDGE, the Tyndall  theme “Integrated Modelling”; Adaptation and Mitigation strategies for Europe (ADAM).
Main research interest is greenhouse gas abatement through fiscal policy, including use of excise duties on energy products, energy-saving incentives, R&D incentives, development of renewable energy sources. The research is mainly applied through models of energy-environment-economy systems at the UK, EU and global levels with projections to 2100.
