Dr. Robert Phaal is the Director of Research, based at the Institute for Manufacturing, Department of Engineering (CUED). Previously, Dr. Phaal worked at The Welding Institute involved in technical consulting, contract research and software development. He has a mechanical engineering background, with a PhD in computational mechanics and industrial experience in technical consulting, contract research and software development. His research is in the area of Strategic Technology and Innovation Management (STIM).

Dr. Phaal is interested in the emergence dynamics of technology-based industry and the development of practical management tools and toolkits. Strategic roadmapping is his key area of ongoing interest, in terms of both research and practice.

Roadmapping emerged in US high-tech sectors more than 50 years ago, and since then has been adopted widely around the world, at both firm and sector levels. This seminar will thus provide an overview of the roadmapping method, its flexibility in any strategic context and the underpinning principles that make it a knowledge integrator in strategy, innovation processes and toolkits.
