Stay Active Cambridge

The University Sport team have announced that the #StayActiveCambridge programme is here to stay.

Weekly health and fitness content will be posted direct to their Youtube channel. Free to access, you can subscribe to their channel on Youtube directly, join their closed Facebook group of likeminded individuals or check out any of their other social media platforms (@camunisport) to stay up to date with session releases. 


Men's Health (and Movember): Prostate cancer, testicular cancer, men’s mental health and suicide prevention

Beards and ‘taches aside, the Movember website is a great place to find information about men’s health.

Their five top tips for men are:

  1. Spend time with the people who make you feel good. Stay connected. Your mates are important and spending time with them is good for you. Catch up regularly, check in and make time (a bit tricky in lockdown but not impossible. You know the drill.)
  2. Talk, more.  You don’t need to be an expert and you don’t have to be the sole solution, but being there for someone, listening and giving your time can be life-saving.
  3. Know the numbers. At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and whether it’s right for you to have a PSA test. If you are black or have a father or brother with prostate cancer, you should be having this conversation at 45. Know your numbers, know your risk, talk to your doctor.
  4. Know thy nuts. Simple. Get to know what’s normal for your testicles. Give them a check regularly (  and go to the doctor if something doesn’t feel right.
  5. Move, more. Add more activity to your day. Do more of what makes you feel good.

A  conversation that could save a life

To mark World Suicide Prevention Day Yvonne McPartland, Deputy Head of the University Staff Counselling Centre, delivered a session on the topic of suicide prevention. Please see the event details and the link to the booking form below.

Suicide Prevention: A Conversation That Could Save a Life

The shocking reality is that suicide is the most common cause of death in men aged under 50 and the suicide rate is currently increasing after many years of decline. This equates to more than 6,000 deaths by suicide annually in the UK and Ireland. What impact will Covid-19 have on suicide numbers?

The session is designed to give staff the confidence to challenge the taboo around suicide that makes it such a difficult subject to broach, with colleagues, family members, friends and even total strangers: what is it OK to say, what should I be looking for and what should I do next? Having a conversation could really save a life.

Looking for online PPD?

You may be aware that Linkedin Learning is now available for all staff, but have you had a look at what’s on offer? Recommended courses cover remote working, wellbeing, digital literacy, professional development and managing your career but there is also a section devoted to leisure and craft activities.


Looking after your own wellbeing

Everyone struggles with remaining in lockdown at some point, and there are plenty of resources available whether you’re feeling low or just looking for ideas to kickstart a new routine. The University’s wellbeing pages are a good place to start. They are constantly being updated and added to, so if you’ve not visited the pages for a while, why not have a look?


Don't forget about your physical wellbeing

If the ergonomics of working from home are starting to give you issues, why not review your workstation set up and see if anything needs to change? The University web pages are a good place to start as they contain guidance on work stations as well as encourage movement and breaks as the best way to look after your musculoskeletal health.  See and and there’s always Yoga with Adriene…

Whether you are or not,  Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s Feel Better. Live More. podcasts are worth a listen. He’s a perceptive interviewer and talks to experts on all aspects of health and wellbeing.

AXA PPP's webinar on tackling lockdown fatigue: maintaining mojo and motivation is available to view online. If you’re struggling to stay motivated, its worth a watch.



A "Wellbeing Centre" has been added to the current CAMbens employee benefits scheme  (currently in place until the end of June).  It’s a specially-curated hub of content and resources that University staff can use to support wellbeing including fitness videos, mindfulness techniques and healthy meal recipes.
