Land Economy does Green Impact Excellence Project 2022-23
This year we have opted to complete an Excellence Project based on feedback from our Green Impact 2021-22 student audit.
Although we achived platinum status for the third year running, we also received some significant feedback:
- As a department we need to include our students more in our Green Impact activities
- As a department we are not seen to participate in enough charitable work
So, as a department we our project aim is to include our students more in our Green Impact/Wellbeing activities (including as a department we should participate in more charitable work/events as part of our Green Impact/Wellbeing activities).
Project title/focus: Improving student inclusion in Land Economy Green Impact and Wellbeing
Objectives
1) Set-up a designated MS Teams Group for Land Economy Green Impact members including students to share information and ideas for initiatives/events
2) Conduct a student survey at the start of Lent Term 2023 (of all cohorts: Tripos, MPhil, MSt and PhD) to gauge their existing awareness of LE Green Impact and how they would like to be more involved in future. The survey data will be analysed/summarised to feed into Objective 3
3) Draft a Land Economy Student Inclusion Plan and combine this with an updated dedicated Green Impact Student webpage as part of the Land Economy Green Impact website
4) Reintroduction of Green Impact Gold Criteria G017: The Department has undertaken at least one end of day/start of day workspace audit.
5) Implement some of the student suggestions in Lent/Easter Terms 2023 and ongoing thereafter, including encouraging all LE staff and students to participate in charity fund-raising events from Michaelmas Term 2023 onwards – aiming to hold at least one fund-raising event per term

LAND ECONOMY'S GREAT BRITISH VEGETABLE GROWING COMPETITION 2022
This year with the department building still in lockdown we decided to hold another vegetable growing competition - this time looking of the biggest and best cucumbers!

LAND ECONOMY GOES TO MADINGLEY
On a surprisingly sunny (but windy) Saturday morning in March (2022), we all enjoyed a really interesting guided tour of the Madingley Hall gardens lead by Head Gardener Richard Gant. Four of us walked cross-country from the Park & Ride to the Hall – a two-mile approx. meander via the University’s 800 Wood which offers a view of Ely Cathedral (and yes in the spring sunshine we were able to see it!). Richard gave an insightful commentary on the history of the Hall and its estate and why particular trees, and other planting are where they are across the 8-acre site. We then enjoyed coffee/cake (they do proper coffee and a delicious homemade three-tiered Victoria Sponge) and a catch-up at the café before heading home. What was so nice about it was not just the interesting tour but to spend some quality time together safely and actually in-person with people I would not usually see, unless we all happen to turn-up at LE Does Coffee some time! Last year while the department building was still locked-down and closed due to covid, with no access to our garden areas, we decided to hold a sunflower growing competition.
