CEENRG Fellows Professor Andreas Kontoleon and Dr Thales A. P. West, together with the colleagues from the University of Cambridge Conservation Research Institute and other institutions in the UK, US and Brazil, co-author a letter published yesterday in Science on how the credibility of carbon offsets threatens forest ecosystems. This letter raises an important issue that current carbon crediting procedures substantially overestimate the degree to which carbon credit projects are contributing to tropical forest conservation, calling for an improvement of the methods used to calculate carbon credits.
