Dr Aiora Zabala, Assistant Professor of Environmental Policy at the Department of Land Economy, has recently published an article on sustainable farming practices.
Drivers to adopt agroforestry and sustainable land-use innovations: A review and framework for policy is published in Land Use Policy and scans 79 qualitative and quantitative articles of case studies globally.
From the abstract:
"We develop a conceptual framework of the predictors that are external (contextual), related to the innovation, and internal or intrinsic to individuals. This framework (...) can be used to evaluate policy ex-ante, by assessing what place-based conditions or barriers may need to be addressed through tailored policy instruments, as well as to inform the selection of explanatory variables in ex-post evaluations."
The study synthesises from across published studies, 207 diverse drivers of individuals' decisions to try and adopt more sustainable land-use practices, mainly focused on sustainable agriculture and agroforestry.
"Complex factors drive individuals' decisions to adopt sustainable land-use practices, including, but not limited to, financial considerations. Here we critically synthesise the many predictors considered in the literature to support place-based policy."
