Dr Gemma Burgess, Director of the Cambridge Centre for Housing and Planning Research, has provided comment for an article on BBC News, regarding the rebuilding of houses destroyed during the war in Ukraine.

President Zelenskyy has said that rebuilding the country after the war could cost upwards of $1 trillion, and a large proportion of that will come from rebuilding homes that Ukrainians have lost during the conflict.

One company, HOMErs, has developed modular homes comprising 3m2 units. The entire house - including furniture and white goods - is able to be loaded onto a single lorry.

The company has already supplied around 50 homes to Ukraine, with their Kyiv factory able to produce around 10 homes per month. They are hoping to expand their capacity for manufacturing the units by opening a new factory in Slovakia.

CCHPR has done much research looking at modular homes, and when asked for comment, Dr Gemma Burgess said of the project,

"In Ukraine, if you're trying to build large volumes of housing, it might be a much cheaper, more efficient way to do it... Quality and sustainability is going to be key."
