The meeting involved experts from a range of disciplinary backgrounds sharing a research focus on sustainability in a real estate context. Dr Fuerst, the only non US-based expert invited to the event, described along with colleagues the challenges facing researchers in estimating the economic value of green retrofits and new construction in a fast-moving environment with limited access to proprietary and business-sensitive data. The second part of the workshop was dedicated to setting out an agenda for future research in this topic area yielding a number of propositions including the costing of energy efficiency and other sustainability in a building context as well as measuring the financial and environmental performance at multiple levels of aggregation.
