Abstract: Financial indices occupy a central role in both equity and debt markets, for both passive and active investors. This talk examines the role of indices in supporting, or obstructing, a sustainable transition. Drawing on market examples, including the Bloomberg Cambridge University Corporate Bond Index project, we will explore the challenges of shifting away from standard market-capitalisation benchmarks, the dependence on often inconsistent ESG ratings, and the risks of greenwashing and data quality. We will also consider different understandings of how indices can address transition risk: are they driven by investor type or preferences, by regulatory design, or by the need for transition finance? The discussion will highlight how indices can be tools of influence, supporting investor engagement strategies.
