Kurt van Staden is entering his second year of the MSt in Real Estate at the Department of Land Economy. His studies are supported by a Departmental award, the MSt in Real Estate Bursary.
Here's what he has to say about his time on the course so far...
The MSt in Real Estate Bursary has made possible a life changing experience. The course has offered exposure to a global classroom of passionate real estate professionals. Unique, personal experiences are shared in discussions where I feel privileged to contribute to as well as learn from classmates about the real estate dynamics in various countries.
Our class consists of architects, master-planners, asset managers, investment managers and valuers, as an example, leading to unbelievable peer-learning with the differing perspectives coming from a wide range of professions in real estate. The lecture schedule is arranged to offer both academic lectures on key literature, site visits in London and Cambridge as well as guest lectures. I believe that this blend has offered me a truly holistic real estate learning and I find myself more inspired and enthusiastic about the real estate industry, particularly after guest lectures by some of the best industry professionals.
A personal highlight for me, as a young professional, was being able to hear the thought process, intentions and operational challenges regarding developments and investments from the key decision makers during our London trips. I have learnt so much through the academic lectures and completing assignments that were based on interesting topics often encouraging an academic lens to a practical question.
