The Lab for Interdisciplinary Spatial Analysis (LISA) is delighted to host an event on 28 March 2024, marking the convergence of academic inquiry and celebration with the book launch of 'Transforming Rural China' by Professor Guy M. Robinson, a fellow of LISA. The event begins with a keynote speech by Professor Robinson, who introduces the central themes of his book. Professor Robinson’s speech offers an insightful overview of China's rural development policies and their outcomes since the 1980s. His comprehensive analysis, drawn from extensive research and collaboration with Chinese scholars, sets the stage for a series of international and interdisciplinary talks.

The symposium includes presentations from scholars across the globe, highlighting the multifaceted and uneven aspects of rural-urban transformations, demographic changes, and socio-economic shifts in China. The speakers come from Australia (University of Adelaide, Central Queensland University), the Netherlands (Wageningen University & Research, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), China (Zhejiang University), and the United Kingdom (University of Cambridge, University of Liverpool, University of Salford, Loughborough University, Aberystwyth University). This wide geographic spread not only enriches the symposium with a multitude of perspectives but also signifies the interdisciplinary and international interest in the themes of rural transformation, land tenure, legal systems, healthcare accessibility, and migration within China.

The event's focus on the transformation of rural China provides a valuable platform for LISA to engage with cutting-edge research that intersects with its core interests in spatial data analysis, policy impact evaluation, and interdisciplinary research. It supports LISA's objectives to contribute to the understanding of complex spatial phenomena and to develop innovative methodologies for analysing spatial data. The book launch and the symposium also offer opportunities to foster dialogue and promote collaboration among scholars from various disciplines. It represents an invaluable opportunity for participants to explore the intersections of geography, economics, environmental studies, and beyond, contributing to a deeper understanding of spatial data analysis in understanding the dynamic changes within rural landscapes.
