The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations dedicated to leading international efforts to eradicate hunger. Their mission is to ensure food security for all, providing people with consistent access to sufficient high-quality food for active, healthy lives. With 195 members, including 194 countries and the European Union, the FAO operates in over 130 countries worldwide.

The regional office for the Near East and North Africa (RNE) was established in Cairo in 1947 and tasked it with the overall identification, planning, implementation and monitoring of FAO programmes in the Region. The RNE covers the following countries: Algeria, Bahrein, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen.

The FAO (RNE) is helping governments face the challenges of food scarcity, malnutrition and war by improving the capacity of countries to collect, produce and analyse data for policy formulation. FAO (RNE) also provides direct support to improve the livelihoods of millions of small farmers and rural communities, especially in countries undergoing conflict. FAO NRE Office helps Member States work toward sustainable increases in agriculture production, minimise depletion and degradation of already scarce natural resources, boost rural development and reduce food loss and waste.

The Centre for Resilience and Sustainable Development are proud of our collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (RNE). Together, we successfully launched the THRIVE academy. The THRIVE Academy is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the capacities of key decision-makers in the NENA (Near East and North Africa) region. Our mission has been to equip them with the skills and tools for evidence-based, timely, practical, and impactful decision-making. We worked around the theme of ‘water’, as water plays a vital role in achieving sustainable and resilient food systems, and represents a significant shared challenge.  This collaboration represents an unwavering commitment to fostering leadership that navigates complexity, amplifies collaboration, and guides the destiny of citizens living in the regional food systems.

The Centre for Resilience and Sustainable Development are delighted to work with a range of FAO RNE team members, including Dr Ahmed Mukhtar and Dr Mohammed Galal.
