Congratulations to Second-year PhD student Vassilis Gkoumas, who has been awarded the Frederick Soddy Postgraduate Award by the Royal Geographical Society, for his research on the social impacts of marine protected areas on local regions.

Vassilis will set out later this year to collect data from 5 national parks in South Europe, with the aim to improve our understanding on how to design effective protected areas that do not harm local economies and culture. His fieldwork is funded with the grant from the award and by the FIDELIO Research Project (European Research Council).
