Research Proposal Title: Future Old Cities: Decision-Making mechanisms role in achieving sustainable development in Old Cities

Academic profile

 

Hussaen is an Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the Department of Architectural Engineering at University of Technology in Iraq. He has 10+ years of experience in higher education and research. Furthermore, he is currently the Director of the University of Technology’s Career Development Centre (UoT-CDC). And a research fellow at the International University & Colleges in Malaysia. He was the Managing Editor for the Iraqi Journal of Architecture and Planning (2017-2021), at which he is currently the editor of Urban Planning section.

Hussaen has a B.Sc. in Architectural Engineering from University of Technology, Iraq. A Postgraduate Diploma In Project Management from Northumbria University, the UK. And an M.Sc. in International Planning and Development from Cardiff University, the UK. Moreover, he finished over 65 short courses and MOOCS from respected organizations including MIT, Harvard, UCL, ETH Zurich, Yale, Autodesk, Elsevier, and more. Hussaen’s current research is around Future Old Cities. He held a PhD offer from the University of Cambridge for three consecutive years 2018-2020 and was one of the 10 finalists to be awarded the Iraqi Top-Ten Scholarship to doing a PhD in one of the world’s top five universities according to Shanghai Ranking. However, due to the financial issues in Iraq following the ISIS conflict and the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic, all scholarship programs by Iraqi government were postponed and ultimately cancelled in 2020.

Hussaen was one of five Iraqi scholars accepted in the Fulbright Visiting Scholars 2018 program – Engineering Cohort, to University of Delaware, US where he gave lectures and participated in research. He also worked as teacher assistant and researcher assistant at Cardiff University, UK in 2011/2012. Finally, he lectured in over 90 seminars, workshops, and professional conferences at many organisations in Iraq and outside. He was awarded over 25 times by many bodies including, the Presidency of the Republic of Iraq, the Iraq parliament, the Prime Minister of Iraq, the Iraqi Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, The President of the United States of America, The US embassy in Baghdad, and more.

 

 

Research interests

 

Hussaen’s current work is around Future Old Cities. His previous work also includes housing affordability, informal urban development, and alternative urban systems of the future. Hussaen worked on various interrelated subjects including Development Planning, City Planning, Spatial Planning, Urban Development, Urbanization, Project Management, Engineering, Geographic Information System (GIS), Building Information Modelling (BIM), and Building Simulation.
