The Department is delighted to announce the creation of the Professor Yeoh Ghim Seng PhD Studentship in Land Economy, our first endowment PhD scholarship. The Studentship will offer one fully funded place each year for one student accepted onto our PhD programme, and is funded by a generous gift from Mr Daryl Ng.

The gift will increase the accessibility of our PhD programme for talented candidates regardless of background, attracting future talent to the Department, strengthening the University’s pipeline for tomorrow’s advances in research, and broadening our impact on critical global issues. The gift also aims to inspire others to support students on their academic journey.

The Studentship’s namesake, Dr Yeoh Ghim Seng, read medicine at Trinity College, Cambridge in the 1940s and later became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a prominent political figure in Singapore. In honouring his late grandfather, Mr Ng was inspired to combine his own passion for real estate with Dr Yeoh’s love for Cambridge to benefit the next generation of scholars in our Department. Mr Ng said,

“I am delighted that this studentship will nurture individuals as remarkable as my grandfather, whose achievements and devotion to Cambridge were an inspiration.  The Department of Land Economy is carrying out vital research with the aim of improving lives on the broadest possible landscape, and I look forward to watching the studentships make their mark.”

Professor Martin Dixon, Head of the Department of Land Economy, said of the gift,

“The Department of Land Economy pursues cutting-edge research that shapes policy in so many important areas of modern life. This meaningful gift will enable more students to contribute to our leading work and attract the very best minds to the department.”

The inaugural recipient of the Professor Yeoh Ghim Seng PhD Studentship in Land Economy will commence their studies in October 2025, with a new scholar entering the Department each year. The process for applying for the Studentship will be announced in due course.
