Land Economy-specific funding opportunities
There are a number of funding opportunities reserved specifically for students in the Department:
The Boyce Family Scholarship covers the fees for one full-time, one-year MPhil student. It is open exclusively to students who are normally resident in North America (including the Caribbean) and South America. Preference will be given to the following:
- Students from backgrounds underrepresented at postgraduate level in their field of study, in the first instance, to women and students from racially minoritized backgrounds.
- Who are pursuing an MPhil in Land Economy, or another course in the social sciences with a focus on the built environment, sustainability, and/or conservation.
The Professor Yeoh Ghim Seng PhD Studentship in Land Economy is the Department's first endowment PhD scholarship. The Studentship will offer one fully funded place each year for one student accepted onto our PhD programme. The inaugural recipient of the Professor Yeoh Ghim Seng PhD Studentship in Land Economy will commence their studies in October 2025, with a new scholar entering the Department each year. The process for applying for the Studentship will be announced in due course.
We have been awarded an ESRC-funded PhD studentship for Oct 2025 entry. The topic of the PhD studentship is ‘A place-based, intersectoral approach for Net Zero’. Funding is available for usually 3.5 years, including a 3-month Innovation Fellowship.
This PhD studentship aims to develop a place-based approach for understanding the behavioural interdependences of the transport, housing and energy sectors at the city-regional scale. This will be done through empirical research using both novel behavioural / experimental data and conventional statistical data such as census.
Applicants are advised to submit their applications by 3rd December 2024.
The Department currently has Economic and Social Research Council funding. This funding is only available to UK and EEA students. The Department has ESRC recognition for the following courses:
- MPhil in Real Estate Finance (full time, 1+3)
- MPhil in Planning, Growth & Regeneration (full time, 1+3)
- MPhil in Environmental Policy (full time, 1+3)
- MPhil in Land Economy Research (full time, 1+3)
- PhD in Land Economy (full time, +3)
Studentships available to the Department have in previous years been limited to only one or two scholarships a year. Applicants should apply for admission in the normal way. The Department will consider all eligible candidates for this funding.

University and College funding opportunities
The Postgraduate Admissions Office website provides information on funding administered centrally within the University. It also provides the Postgraduate Funding Search database that contains information on other funding, such as that offered by Colleges. Applicants are advised that funding deadlines are often earlier than the closing dates for courses and that they should thoroughly research their funding options and the relevant deadline dates suitably in advance. Students who wish to be considered for central funding (for example, funding from the Cambridge Trusts) must ensure that they complete the relevant section of the application form and supply the additional personal reference as required.
