Department to host Subject Masterclass in March

Following on from the success of the Department's Subject Masterclass in August 2023, we are delighted to be hosting another in March 2024. These Masterclasses offer prospective undergraduate students a chance to see what it's like to study at Cambridge.

On 22^nd March, we will be joined by two academics from the Department:

• Professor Shailaja Fennell (Deputy Head of Department and Professor of Economic Security and Resilience)
• Dr Carolin Hoeltken (Senior Teaching Associate in Real Estate, Economics and Finance).

Professor Fennell's talk is titled: 'Cities and Sustainability: the link between public provision and inclusion'

In many countries today, governments tend to provide fewer and poorer quality services to areas with the lowest socio-economic levels, resulting in a greater risk of growing inequality within a city. This lecture will examine the increased risk to livelihoods and income generation that arise from this skewed system of planning. It will look at examples from the Global North and Global South and analyse the implication of such unequal levels of provision, on living standards in the informal sector in the city and on the ability of rural areas to provide food and other services to the city.

Dr Hoeltken's talk is titled 'Of People and Places: Exploring Residential Property Markets'

Exploring housing markets is crucial due to their profound impact on individuals, economies, and societies at large. In our discussion, we'll uncover factors influencing housing prices and availability, shedding light on how these dynamics directly shape people's access to adequate housing and overall well-being. Furthermore, we'll delve into the broader implications of housing trends and discuss the interest that various stakeholder groups have in housing markets.

As well as seeing how undergraduate teaching works at Cambridge, attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A, have an introduction to the admissions process, and hear about what it's really like to study at Cambridge from a current undergraduate.
