He officially started his term of office on 1st January 2024.

"I am delighted to be starting my time as Head of Department and am looking forward to continuing the excellent work of the Department across its teaching and research. The newly appointed Deputy Head of Department, Professor Fennell, alongside other members of management team are all here to support staff and the students and are looking forward to the upcoming term.

Professor Howarth is now taking a well earned sabbatical, but we all owe him a debt of gratitude for his work over the last five years, through what has been difficult and challenging times for us all."

There are necessarily some changes to the leadership organisation of the Department:

Professor Shailaja Fennell is the new Deputy Head of Department
Professor Maria Abreu is the new Head of Teaching
