LE Waste and Recycling
We take waste and recycling management seriously at Land Economy and have done all we can within the limitations of the age and design of our building to reduce excessive waste and to encourage recycling and reuse as much as possible.
Our department adheres to the principles of the University’s current Waste Strategy and Waste Duty of Care, and day to day we follow the waste recycling guidance and procedures as overseen by the Environmental Sustainability Team – Estates Division.
When the University’s new recycling provider, Mountain Recycling, began in July 2023, we took the opportunity to streamline our recycling bins and ran an awareness campaign with new signage across the building so staff and students are clearly aware of how to dispose of their waste. Colleagues are encouraged to take their packed lunch waste back home and to use “keep cups” for their hot drinks rather than single-use recyclable cups from nearby takeaway cafes.
One year on and the Sustainability Team confirmed that we have produced less than a tonne of waste in 12-months 😊
All IT waste items are recycled through the University’s provider Restore Technology, and collection is co-ordinated by our IT Technician. Household batteries are collected and recycled through TradeBe Environmental Services.
We hold an annual stationery amnesty to reuse/recycle and reduce the number of new items ordered through our sustainable procurement policy, and regularly encourage staff and students to recycle other items such as old bicycle tyres from our Dr Bike sessions (via local retailers Go Outdoors or Decathlon) and unwanted reading glasses (via Specsavers).
Under our sustainable procurement policy and waste/recycling policy we recycle furniture and other unwanted items through our membership of Warp It
Refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose, recycle, recover 😊
